What are stemcells?
All cells in your body start as embryonic stemcells.
🩸BLOOD🩸stemcells are found in your bone marrow.
They develop into different types of tissue cells (PLURIPOTENT).
If you have🩸BLOOD CANCER🩸like leukaemia or lymphoma, your stemcells & bloodcells don’t work properly.
You might need a stemcell transplant FROM A MATCHING DONOR to replace your damaged cells with healthy ones.
What is a Stem Cell Transplant?
We’re working together to share clear, supportive information about STEM CELL transplants to help people with🩸BLOOD CANCER🩸.
The Three Main Types of STEM CELL Transplants
AUTOLOGOUS TRANSPLANT — uses your own STEM CELLS, after CANCER CELLS have been removed. This type of transplant could put you into remission.
ALLOGENEIC TRANSPLANT — uses STEM CELLS from a matching donor. This may be a family member, someone on the donor register, or CORD BLOOD BANK.
CAR-T TRANSPLANT — genetically modifies your own STEM CELLS to fight a specific type of BLOOD CANCER, defined by genetic abnormality.
Following a STEMCELL TRANSPLANT
Your bone marrow produces new healthy stemcells.
These start to build you new immune system.
This is called engraftment.
Your new immune system will produce healthy🩸BLOOD🩸cells and attack any remaining cancer cells.
